Test Structure and Four Parts of IELTS Test

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an English language proficiency test. It is an international standardized test for non-native English speakers. IELTS is one of the major English-language tests accepted around the world. This test is jointly managed by different councils like the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge assessment English. Test Structure

There are two modules of the IELTS – Academic module and General Training Module. Similarly, there is also a separate test offered by the IELTS test partners, which is called IELTS Life Skills.

  • The IELTS Academic is for those who want to enroll in universities and other institutions of higher education. This is also intended for professionals such as medical doctors and nurses who are willing to study or practice in any English- speaking countries.
  • IELTS General Training is meant for those planning to undertake some kind of non-academic training. It is also useful to gain work experience or for any immigration purposes.
  • IELTS Life Skills are for those who need to prove their English Speaking skills at the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

 

Four Parts of IELTS Tests

  • Listening test: 30 minutes (with 10 minutes transfer time)
  • Reading test: 60 minutes
  • Writing test: 60 minutes
  • Speaking: 11-14 minutes

Here the listening, reading, and writing tests are taken at once. Also the test takers will take the same listening and speaking tests. Similarly reading and writing tests differ depending on whether they are taking Academic or General Training.

  • Listening – The module comprises four sections with having ten questions in both section. It will have sections like a conversation between two speakers, one person speaking, a conversation between two main speakers, and one person speaking about an academic subject.
  • Reading –The reading paper is of three sections. The reading texts are coming  from books, journals, magazines, newspapers, and online resources that are written for non-specialist audiences.
  • Writing – The writing paper has two tasks. Here the test takers must describe a graph, table, map, process, pie chart or diagram in their own words. In the other task they must describe a point of view, argument or a problem.
  • Speaking – The speaking test is the face-to-face interview between the test taker and examiner. It contains sections like introduction and interview, giving task card about a particular topic and discussion relating to the theme.
