Why the PTE Exam in Kerala Is Gaining Popularity (2026 Update)
A few years ago, almost every student in Kochi preparing to go abroad assumed IELTS was the only option. Today, many are choosing the PTE exam in Kerala instead, especially those heading to Australia or New Zealand. But PTE is not automatically the better test for everyone. This 2026 update looks at why PTE Academic has become so popular, where IELTS still makes more sense, and how to decide which one fits your plans.
What PTE Academic looks like in 2026
PTE Academic is a computer-based test from Pearson that checks speaking, writing, reading and listening in a single sitting of about two hours. It has three parts:
- Speaking and Writing (about 76 to 84 minutes): tasks such as Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Answer Short Question, Summarize Written Text and Write Essay.
- Reading (about 23 to 30 minutes).
- Listening (about 31 to 39 minutes).
In 2025 Pearson added two new speaking tasks: Summarize Group Discussion, where you listen to three people discuss a topic and summarise it in your own words, and Respond to a Situation, where you give a spoken reply to an everyday scenario. If you are using older books or free videos, check that they include these tasks.
Scores are reported on a 10 to 90 scale, with a breakdown for each skill.
Why the PTE exam in Kerala is gaining ground
1. Fast results
Pearson says results typically arrive within two days. For students racing to meet a university deadline or a visa appointment, that speed is a real advantage. You can also share your scores with as many institutions as you need at no extra cost.
2. AI scoring with human checks
PTE uses AI scoring combined with human expertise. Many students like that the speaking section is not a face-to-face conversation, so the result does not depend on how one examiner feels on the day. The flip side is that the system rewards specific things, such as smooth fluency and covering the content, so you need to learn exactly what each task measures.
3. A speaking section that suits nervous speakers
You speak into a microphone, not to a person. Students who freeze in front of an examiner often find this less stressful. However, the speaking tasks are short and timed tightly, so hesitation costs marks quickly.
4. Wide acceptance, with some important details
PTE Academic is accepted by thousands of universities worldwide, including virtually all universities in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK, and many in the US. Here is where the details matter:
- Australia and New Zealand: PTE Academic is accepted for migration, work and study visas that need an English test.
- Canada: universities accept PTE Academic for admission, but for permanent residency and citizenship applications IRCC uses PTE Core, a separate Pearson test.
- UK: for work visas and study below degree level, you may need PTE Academic UKVI rather than the standard test.
Always confirm the exact test name your university, employer or visa category asks for before you book.
5. Frequent test dates
PTE offers regular test dates, often with last-minute slots. That flexibility helps working professionals and students who need a score quickly.
6. Typing instead of handwriting
All writing is typed. If you type quickly and accurately, the writing tasks can feel easier than handwriting a long essay. If you type slowly, practise early, because time pressure is real.
7. Strong coaching support in Kochi
As interest in the PTE exam in Kerala has grown, more trainers now understand how PTE scoring works task by task. Good coaching focuses on what the scoring actually rewards rather than generic English practice.
PTE vs IELTS: an honest comparison
| Point | PTE Academic | IELTS |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Fully computer-based, about 2 hours | Paper or computer; speaking is a separate face-to-face interview |
| Speaking | Into a microphone, short timed tasks | Conversation with a trained examiner |
| Scoring | AI scoring with human expertise, 10 to 90 scale | Trained examiners for speaking and writing, band 0 to 9 |
| Results | Typically within 2 days | Faster on computer than on paper; check your centre |
| Best suited to | Confident typists, students who prefer not to speak to an examiner, Australia and New Zealand plans | Students who speak well in conversation, and anyone whose target organisation lists IELTS specifically |
Neither test is “easier” for everyone, and that is the honest answer most students preparing for the PTE exam in Kerala need to hear. A student who speaks naturally but types slowly may do better in IELTS. A student who is shy in conversation but practises hard on timed tasks may prefer PTE. How to decide which test to take
- Check the requirement first. Look up the exact test and minimum score on your university or visa page. This decides more than anything else.
- Try both formats. Take a free sample or practice test for each. Notice which one feels more natural under time pressure.
- Be honest about your speaking style. Do you think better in conversation, or when speaking alone to a screen?
- Consider your typing speed. Slow typing can hold back a PTE score even if your English is strong.
- Plan for a retake. Book early enough that you have time for a second attempt if needed.
Preparing for PTE the right way
The students who do well in PTE learn each task’s scoring rules, practise under real timing and get feedback on their recordings. Speaking tasks such as Describe Image reward a clear structure and steady fluency; our PTE Describe Image guide shows exactly how to approach one of the trickiest tasks. Above all, avoid memorised scripts. Pearson’s scoring is designed to detect them.
Frequently asked questions
Is PTE easier than IELTS?
Not for everyone. PTE suits students who are comfortable with computers, type quickly and prefer not to speak to an examiner. IELTS can suit students who speak naturally in conversation. Try a practice test of each before deciding.
Can I use PTE Academic for Canada PR?
For permanent residency and citizenship, IRCC uses PTE Core, not PTE Academic. Canadian universities, however, widely accept PTE Academic for admission. Check your specific programme and visa route.
How quickly do I get my PTE result?
Pearson says results typically arrive within two days, although it can occasionally take longer. Build a little extra time into your plans if you have a fixed deadline.
