PTE Coaching in Kochi: Test Format, Prep Time and How It Works
PTE Academic has become a popular choice for students and professionals in Kerala who plan to study, work or migrate abroad. It is fully computer-based, scored by AI with human expert checks, and results usually arrive within about two days. If you are looking for PTE coaching in Kochi or Ernakulam, this guide explains what the test involves today, what good coaching should include, how long preparation usually takes, and how our online one-on-one classes work.
What is PTE Academic?
PTE Academic is a four-skills English test from Pearson that measures Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening. You take it on a computer at a test centre, and the whole test lasts about two hours. Scores are reported on a scale of 10 to 90, with an overall score and separate scores for each skill.
According to Pearson, PTE Academic is accepted for study by universities and colleges worldwide, including virtually all universities in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. It is also accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs and Immigration New Zealand for visas that need an English test.
Two related tests are worth knowing about:
- PTE Core is the version accepted by IRCC for Canadian permanent residence (for example, Express Entry) and citizenship. PTE Academic is not used for those applications.
- PTE Academic UKVI is used for UK work visas and for study below degree level.
Always check which test and which score your university or visa category requires before you book. If you are still deciding between tests, our post on the difference between PTE and IELTS may help.
The current PTE Academic format
In August 2025 Pearson added two new speaking tasks, Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation, so the test now has 22 question types. Make sure any coaching or material you use covers the updated format.
| Part | Approx. time | Question types |
|---|---|---|
| Part 1: Speaking and Writing | 76 to 84 minutes | Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Answer Short Question, Summarize Group Discussion, Respond to a Situation, Summarize Written Text, Write Essay (plus an unscored Personal Introduction) |
| Part 2: Reading | 23 to 30 minutes | Reading and Writing Fill in the Blanks, Multiple Choice (multiple and single answer), Reorder Paragraphs, Fill in the Blanks (drag and drop) |
| Part 3: Listening | 31 to 39 minutes | Summarize Spoken Text, Multiple Choice (multiple and single answer), Fill in the Blanks, Highlight Correct Summary, Select Missing Word, Highlight Incorrect Words, Write from Dictation |
Because PTE is an integrated test, many tasks count towards more than one skill. Repeat Sentence, for example, affects both Speaking and Listening, and Write from Dictation affects both Listening and Writing. This is why strategy matters as much as general English level.
A quick example: Respond to a Situation
In this new task you hear (and see) a short everyday scenario and must reply aloud as if you were really there. Suppose the prompt says: You booked a table at a restaurant for tonight, but you now need to cancel. Call the restaurant and explain. A clear, natural answer might be:
Hello, I am calling about my booking. I reserved a table for four people at eight o’clock tonight, but unfortunately I have to cancel because a family member is unwell. I’m sorry for the short notice. Could you please confirm the cancellation? I hope to book again next week. Thank you.
Notice the structure: greet the listener, state the situation, give a reason, make a request and close politely. Coaching should help you build this kind of flexible structure rather than a memorised script. Pearson has said its updated scoring does more to detect copied or unoriginal responses, so templates learnt by heart can work against you.
What good PTE coaching in Kochi should include
Clear teaching of every task type
Each of the 22 task types has its own timing, scoring and best approach. Your trainer should explain how each task is scored, which skills it feeds into, and the most common mistakes, from starting too late after the microphone opens to exceeding word limits.
Speaking practice with feedback on fluency and pronunciation
The AI scoring rewards smooth, natural speech at a steady pace. Many students lose marks by pausing, restarting sentences or speaking too fast. Regular recorded practice with correction helps you fix hesitation and pronunciation habits. For one of the trickiest speaking tasks, see our PTE Describe Image techniques.
Writing and typing skills
Summarize Written Text, Write Essay, Summarize Spoken Text and Write from Dictation all depend on accurate typing, spelling and grammar. Good coaching includes practice under time limits and careful correction of essays and summaries.
Listening and note-taking
You hear each recording only once, and you will meet a range of accents. Strong note-taking is essential for Retell Lecture, Summarize Group Discussion and Summarize Spoken Text. Our post on PTE Listening note-taking has practical techniques.
Reading strategies
Fill in the Blanks questions test vocabulary, collocations and grammar together. Skimming for the main idea, reading around each gap and learning common word partnerships make a real difference here.
Timed mock tests and score analysis
Computer-based mock tests show you how you handle the pace of the full test. The real value comes from reviewing the results with a trainer and adjusting your plan to target the tasks that cost you the most marks.
How long does PTE preparation take?
This is one of the first questions students ask when they look for PTE coaching in Kochi. There is no fixed answer, because it depends on your current English level and the score you need. As a rough guide:
- Already comfortable in English and needing a moderate score: a few weeks of focused practice on task strategy and timing is often enough.
- Needing a high score, such as 79 or above in every skill: expect a longer period of steady practice, especially on speaking fluency and writing accuracy.
- Weaker in grammar or vocabulary: build your general English first, then move to test strategy. Our Communicative English course can help with that foundation.
A diagnostic test at the start is the most reliable way to estimate your own timeline.

Top PTE preparation tips
- Speak at a steady, natural pace: fluency matters more than speed. Avoid long pauses and self-corrections.
- Improve your typing: practise typing accurately without looking at the keyboard.
- Respect word limits: for example, Summarize Spoken Text needs 50 to 70 words.
- Check spelling and grammar: leave a minute to review written answers.
- Practise the new tasks: do not rely on older material that skips Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation.
- Use official resources: Pearson’s scored practice tests show how you might perform on the real test.
Frequently asked questions
Is PTE Academic accepted for Canada?
PTE Academic is widely accepted by Canadian universities for admission. For Canadian permanent residence and citizenship, however, IRCC accepts PTE Core, not PTE Academic. Check the requirements of your specific programme before booking.
How soon do PTE results come?
Pearson says results are typically available within about two days of the test, which is helpful if you are working to an application deadline.
Can I prepare for PTE fully online?
Yes. PTE is a computer-based test, so practising on a computer from home suits it well. Live one-on-one online sessions give you speaking practice, writing corrections and feedback without travelling to a centre.
